Microalgae Basis of New Vegan Egg

A new plant-based protein source, algal flour and protein, is making an appearance in a new eggless egg product from FollowYourHeart. The microalgae protein from Solazyme is the basis of a new egg substitute expected to be available at the end of October.

Vegan Egg will be sold through the mail from Amazon at first. If it catches on, it may be at your local Whole Foods eventually.

The company says this scrambler product is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free, which takes care of the most common food allergies. Vegan Egg is made with algal protein and flour, nutritional yeast, cellulose, calcium lactate, and carrageenan, a substance derived also from algae and used as a thickener in things like almond milk.

Solazyme sees a big future for algae in modern plant-based diets, industrial applications, fuel and personal care products so we’ll probably hear more from them soon. One thing our world has is a lot of algae.
